Rust resistant wheat

Rust diseases pose some of the most significant and ever-present threats to wheat production worldwide.

Losses due to rust of only a few percent globally would spike prices and disproportionately harm the world’s poorest consumers. Production increases from use of disease resistant semidwarf wheat varieties have averted potentially disastrous shortfalls in world food stocks since the 1970s.

CIMMYT is drawing upon its extensive germplasm resources, deep genetic improvement knowledge, network of collaborators, and modern bioscience innovations to create with its partners a new generation of stable, resilient, and profitable wheat germplasm possessing durable resistance to the major rust diseases.
