2007
Dear CIMMYT Regional and International Nurseries Partners,
On 16 October 2006, all Centres of the CGIAR System holding
collections of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
(PGRFA) signed Agreements with the Governing Body of the International
Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
(the Treaty) placing their in trust collections of PGRFA within
the purview of the Treaty.
In accordance with this Agreement, you are
hereby advised that, as from 1 January 2007, all shipments
of PGRFA of crops listed in Annex 1 to the Treaty (shipments
of PGRFA under the Multilateral System) will be subject to
the terms and conditions of the Standard Material Transfer
Agreement (SMTA) adopted by the Governing Body of the Treaty
at it’s First Session in June 2006.
Future shipments of PGRFA under the Multilateral
System will be accompanied by the SMTA and that your acceptance
and use of the Material will constitute acceptance of the
terms and conditions of the SMTA. During 2007, all germplasm
shipments from CIMMYT will use a “shrink wrap”
SMTA, with acceptance indicated by opening the germplasm package.
Thereafter, SMTA acceptance can be made using one of three
options: via the internet during the initial request of germplasm;
with “shrink wrapped” packaging; or, with both
parties signing the SMTA prior to the shipment of the germplasm.
You will be given the opportunity to notify CIMMYT in advance
of which SMTA acceptance method you prefer.
Yours sincerely,
Masaru Iwanaga
Director General, CIMMYT
