  Rural Poverty Mapping in Mexico

Using Map Services within ArcExplorer

All of the map services created as part of the Mexico rural poverty mapping project can be used directly with ESRI's free GIS browser - ArcExplorer. The following instructions provide details on how to do this.

1. Download and install ArcExplorer (Java edition). Click here to obtain ArcExplorer and follow the download & installation instructions provided by ESRI..

2. Open ArcExplorer. Click on the "Add Layers" toolbar button . This will open the "Catalog" menu.

3. In Data Sources, click on the + sign next to WWW, then double-click on "Add Web Site".

4. In the "WWW Connection" menu type "www.cimmyt.org/GIS/povertymexico" into the URL field. Click OK.

5. From the list of services that appear, select one of "povertycrops" or "povertyenvironment" or "povertysocial" and click on the "Add Layers" button . The map service should now appear in ArcExplorer.

Note: The actual display of the map service layers can not be changed within ArcExplorer, but the order of display can be changed, local layers of information (shape files and geo-referenced images) can be added and queries / information retrieval can be undertaken.
